Driving back home from work Wednesday I stopped for a pedestrian and I notice that under the hood of my car was smoking. I was nervous but I did not panic. It only smoke when I stop. There are only 3 stop sign on the way home and 2 more to go. I did not notice any unusual smell and while driving the smoke disappear no warning signs of red light on the dash. I told myself, just drive slow Weng and get home.
And I did arrived home safely. I open the hood and there was a squirting fluid out of a hose directly to the hot engine. I let it cool off and check the anti freeze. And sure enough it was the anti freeze hose assuming for engine coolant. Since the hubby is not here I had to take care of this problem. But I let him know..
So with my already busy day Thursday, I went to one of the local car parts store not far from my house. And showed the person inside the store my problem and he gave me the right hose to buy. Then he recommended for me to go across the street in one of those drive through oil change place for repair. And the man in the store said it should not cost that much. Jiffy Lube.
I pulled in across the street with my smoking/steaming car and ask for an oil change and repair for the tlicky hose. They looked at it and told me that it will cost me $45 dollars for the repair and $19.99 for the oil change. I thought ok, do it. It took them two hours to fix it including the oil change. And they kinda rattle me for the hose that I bought and said that it might not work and that they will find a part in their shop to fix it because the hose I got was to soft. The possibility of it kinking and prevent the flow. I said do what you have to do and I pay 45 dollars no more no less. And they did.
Now I have a car that do not steam under the hood. But I notice that it kinda runs funny. It cuts off a lot and it dies. So now I am thinking that I have an air vacuum hose loose. The repair work might have knock something else.

I am not a mechanic but with a hubby that is pretty handy about this stuff, I pay attention to when he work on cars/vehicle and I learn a thing or two to know when a car is in distress and needed TLC.

I was hoping that my car would miraculously fix itself. It dies when I stop and press on the clutch. Then if not it would cut off up and down sound and I have to be careful for the balance on both break and clutch as I press it with my foot.
Took the kids to their eye appointment early this morning because they have no school and it run late and my car still running bad. We got home okay and ask my 15 year old to help me find a hose that is loose under the hood. And sure enough I found the problem.
And tonight my children and I are getting ready to attend a very important dinner celebration invitation with Lola Ruth and Lolo Herman at their lovely home.

Way to go Weng! I am suspicious that Jiffy Lube tried to take advantage of you by removing that hose. They may have been hoping that you would be back for that repair, but your ingenuity saved the day.
ReplyDeleteHi Weng,
ReplyDeleteGreat story!

It is amazing that, even if you don’t know much about cars, you still managed to find and fix the problem yourself. You seem to have learned a lot from your husband, who seems to be quite the grease monkey himself! Can’t say the same for the car repair shop you went to though. It seems they fixed one problem just to cause another!

Michelina is right. :) It really pays to have the knowledge in repairing your own car. It will not only help you be more independent, but it will also help when you have to choose a car repair service provider. Being knowledgeable about car repairs will help you determine which car center delivers good service, especially when you ask the right things about your car.
